War/Military Fiction
War/military fiction is a subset of historical fiction focused on fictionalized narratives of military and war history, and almost exclusively targeting a male audience.
Notable authors in the genre are Jeff Shaara and Bernard Cornwell. Unlike other military genres such as military science fiction and military thrillers, these books are defined by their historical accuracy. One standout book in this genre is Phil Klay's Redeployment, which won the 2014 National Book Award. Read our interview with the author here.
Military fiction stories that contain a greater degree of adventure and are less centered on the historical events are better described as military thrillers.
Book Country's genre map will continue to change as new literary categories emerge and others fall out of fashion. If you write war/military fiction, explore this genre to connect with other like-minded writers, workshop, and publish your book.
